Artist statement

A recurring theme in my artistic practice has been the desire to condense the world into a safe scale. This impulse has its roots in my childhood — a time when reality seemed too vast and frightening. Over time, this impulse has evolved into a way of exploring themes of power, social injustice, vulnerability, and trauma through working with scale, playful aesthetics, and the construction of mise-en-scène.

Through painting and miniatures, I reexamine the familiar hierarchy of power and control and create a space in which both the artist and the viewer can temporarily reclaim a sense of agency and control in the face of overwhelming circumstances. I am interested in the possibility of addressing violence and vulnerability through deliberately positive, cute, and funny images—what I call «naive satire». My works mimic toys and borrow a pseudo-playful structure, creating a productive clash between a vibrant narrative and a disturbing context.

About me

I grew up in Nizhny Novgorod, but always dreamed of St. Petersburg, where I eventually managed to live and receive education at the Institute of Culture. But due to the start of the war in Ukraine and political repression, I was forced to leave the country and build a new life.

In exile, I had the opportunity to openly discuss politics, and I focused on my own visual practice. Currently, I live in Serbia and am a participant in the international exhibition project Artists Against the Kremlin. My artistic projects have been covered by independent media such as Meduza, DOXA, «Vot Tak», Trouw and «Verstka».
